Gedurfd en vocaal grensverleggend
Een improviserend koor: de Canadese dirigent en stemkunstenaar Christine Duncan, oprichter van het Element Choir in Toronto, draait er haar hand niet voor om. Vocalist Ineke Vandoorn en gitarist Mare van Vugt waren direct enthousiast toen ze Duncan tijdens een Canadese tournee aan het werk zagen met haar improviserend koor. Zo ontstond het idee voor het livealbum The Soundmakers Project. Vandoorn en van Vugt nodigden vijftig Nederlandse Soundmakers uit die werden geleid door Duncans cues. The Soundmakers is geen traditioneel zangkoor, maar bestaat uit mensen die het leuk vinden om hun stem op allerlei manieren te gebruiken. Samen improviseerden ze geluiden, teksten, ritmes, steren, en creëerden zo complete soundscapes bij de composities en improvisaties van Vandoorn en van Vugt. We horen stemmen in de meest avontuurlijke vormen en klankkleuren voorbijkomen, soms ingetogen en mysterieus zoals op Hatfield 22, dan weer uitbundig en emotioneel tijdens de Soundmakers Improv1. Een improviserend koor klinkt misschien complex, en soms is het even wennen aan de groepsimprovisaties en uiteenlopende klankkleuren, maar het leidt tot een gedurfd en vocaal grensverleggend album. De grens tussen taal en klank vervaagt, evenals de grens tussen koor, dirigent en solist. En zo zijn er acht originele nummers geboren die samen een organisch geheel vormen, aan elkaar geweven door de spannende improvisaties van Vandoorn zelf en het prachtige gitaarspel van Van Vugt.

Bold and vocally groundbreaking
An improvisational choir: Canadian conductor and vocal artist Christine Duncan, founder of the Element Choir in Toronto, is no stranger to this concept. Vocalist Ineke Vandoorn and guitarist Mare van Vugt were immediately enthusiastic when they saw Duncan at work with her improvisational choir during a Canadian tour. This sparked the idea for the live album The Soundmakers Project. Vandoorn and van Vugt invited fifty Dutch Soundmakers, who were led by Duncan’s cues. The Soundmakers is not a traditional choir, but consists of people who enjoy using their voices in all kinds of ways. Together they improvised sounds, lyrics, rhythms, and stars, creating complete soundscapes to accompany the compositions and improvisations of Vandoorn and van Vugt. We hear voices in the most adventurous forms and timbres, sometimes subdued and mysterious as on Hatfield 22, then exuberant and emotional during Soundmakers Improv1. An improvising choir may sound complex, and sometimes it takes some getting used to the group improvisations and diverse timbres, but it leads to a daring and vocally groundbreaking album. The boundary between language and sound becomes blurred, as does the boundary between choir, conductor, and soloist. And so eight original songs are born, forming an organic whole, woven together by Vandoorn’s own exciting improvisations and Van Vugt’s beautiful guitar playing.
