Voices, sometimes lovely and mysterious, other times emotional and powerful. In the Soundmakers project 50 Soundmakers, guided by Christine Duncan’s cues, improvise sounds, texts, rhythms, emotions and create entire worlds to the music of singer Ineke Vandoorn and guitarist Marc van Vugt. Nothing is predetermined, so the music truly arises in the moment. The Soundmakers are not a traditional singing choir but consists of people who not necessarily identify themselves as singers, but want to use their voice and enjoy making sounds.
The Soundmakers Project is an initiative of Dutch Grammy winners Marc van Vugt and Ineke Vandoorn. They are known for their adventurous and lyrical music and travel the world with it. Marc and Ineke released 13 CD’s with line-ups ranging from a jazz trio to the Metropole Orchestra (conducted by Vince Mendoza) and the Dutch Chamber Choir. Their original approach has taken them to clubs and festivals in Canada, New York, Japan, France, Germany, Indonesia. Both in 2016-2018-2023 they made a 5 week-tour in Canada, playing concerts and teaching at Universities in Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa. Christine Duncan is the leader and founder of the Element Choir, the world’s leading vocal improvisation group from Toronto. With the Element Choir she has collaborated with the famous Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq, among others.
“In January 2024 we invited Christine Duncan to the Netherlands for the Soundmakers Project in which we combined our music with soundscapes created by a group of Dutch Soundmakers led by Christine. The project was performed with three different groups of Soundmakers in Houten, Arnhem and Den Bosch. The Final concert, in which 50 Soundmakers participated, was recorded live for video and audio. The CD was released in September 2025”
